The Cernica monastic complex is situated approximately 12 kilometers south-east of Bucharest, in a picturesque area, on the edge of a century-old forest. On the two islands of lake Cernica (with a total surface of 360 ha), two churches were erected: the Church of Saint Nicholas from the Islet, built in 1815 on the foundations of an old 17th century monastery and decorated on the inside by Master Fotache in the Byzantine style of religious painting; and the Church of Saint George, built between 1831 and 1838, and surrounded by low walls that hide the bell-tower from view. The monastic ensemble has an important cultural tradition, preserved during the ages (with few interruptions) by means of a library, a printing press, a school of religious painting, a theological seminary and an old religious art museum, which houses icons from the 18th and 19th centuries. The monastery provides now shelter to approximately one hundred monks.
